Introducing the Presidential Student Ambassadors Program

This sounds like a fantastic opportunity! Here’s a letter from the University president, Barry Maloney –

Dear Members of the WSU Community,

It is my pleasure to announce the establishment of the WSU Presidential Student Ambassadors program. This stellar group of undergraduate students will expand their engagements with the University and will develop resume and career building skills.

The Presidential Student Ambassadors will serve as student representatives of the University at events both on and off campus, and will participate in a variety of community service initiatives. They will also be afforded the opportunity to communicate and work with community and business leaders while building lifelong career skills and networking prospects. The Ambassadors will attend social functions, provide tours with visiting dignitaries, and speak about student life and academic experiences. They will have the opportunity to learn from and work with the Worcester State University President, Board of Trustees, Worcester State Foundation, and Alumni.

Valuable training will be provided in the following areas: Professionalism, Etiquette, Leadership, Philanthropy, Public Relations, WSU history and current University priorities. This will provide our Ambassadors with skill sets and a knowledge base that will serve their career goals long after they graduate from the university. These students will be central in demonstrating to the broader community that Worcester Sate University is home to a very high caliber student body.

We are currently accepting applications online. Applicants must meet the qualifications/eligibility. To learn more and to apply, visit: www.worcester.edu/StudentAmbassadors. Online applications must be submitted by March 27, 2012. The selection committee will review all applications and students will be notified if they are selected for an interview with the committee. Interviews will begin the week of April 10, 2012 and acceptance letters will be sent out April 27, 2012.

Please take a moment to review the website and determine if this is an opportunity you would like to pursue. Please feel free to contact my office if you have any questions.

I am committed to ensuring that our Ambassadors build confidence and have fun working with other talented student leaders.

Barry M. Maloney
President

New Honors Director, Spring 2012 Semester

We have big news in the Honors Program! After seven and a half years of leading the Honors Program at Worcester State, Dr. Lisa Krissoff Boehm will become the interim Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, beginning January 24th (pending Board of Trustees approval on Jan 23rd). We wish her all the best in her new position and thank her deeply for all her hard work with Honors.

In her place we welcome Dr. Karen Woods Weierman as the new Director of the Honors Program. Dr. Tona Hangen will stay on as the Assistant Director. Karen Woods Weierman holds a B.A. in American Studies from Georgetown University and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota. She has taught American literature and first-year writing courses at Worcester State since 2000 and has frequently taught courses in the honors program. Her book, One Nation, One Blood: Interracial Marriage in American Fiction, Scandal, and Law, 1820-70 (University of Massachusetts Press) is now available in paperback and ebook formats. Her current research project, Slaves Cannot Breathe in Boston: Free Soil and “The Case of the Slave-Child, Med,” explores a slave transit case that transformed the law of American slavery.

She will be holding office hours in the Honors Center (LRC-218) as well as in her faculty office in the Department of English and she looks forward to working with honors students and faculty.

Research Money Available from the Worcester State Foundation

Just a reminder that we have a wonderful support opportunity for aspiring students interested in participating in research and presentation projects – and it is seeking applications!

Last year the Worcester State Foundation established a Student Research Grant Fund to provide up to $10,000 annually to support undergraduate student research, scholarship and creative activity. This fund is managed by the Foundation Board of Directors and is a joint effort of the offices of Institutional Advancement and Academic Affairs to promote scholarly and creative pursuits. The program piloted last spring, with the first student awards being made at the end of the year.

See some of the great projects funded here and here.

The Student Research Fund has a rolling application deadline. Any matriculated full-time or part-time undergraduate Worcester State University student is eligible to apply for the funds. Interested students can obtain a grant application from the Office of Academic Affairs.

Honors students: this is a great way to fund your Commonwealth Honors Project research!
